Asphalt shingled roofs have been in use on homes in the United States since 1911.  They also have not seen significant design change.  There are many reasons that shingles have been the leading roofing materials for homes for over a century.  One great thing about them is that they are repairable in most circumstances.

If your roof sustains some damage in an area, it is most likely that it can be fixed or repaired without needing the entire roof replaced.  Other common repairs that are needed just because of common deterioration over time are: pipe boots, skylights, and chimney flashings and other penetrations.  Also, loose shingles and sealings of the vulnerable areas are often needed on roofs after some years go by.
